5 Health and Wellness Tips To Avoid Getting Sick at Work

When you’re at work, you need to put your best foot forward. There are dozens of challenges you need to handle on a daily basis, and if you’re distracted because of being sick then you won’t be able to operate at your best. That’s why it’s important to keep the following wellness tips in mind if you want to make sure that your health stays in tip-top shape, so you can knock out all the items on your calendar.

Tip #1: Embrace The Fist Bump

While it’s often seen as a kind of macho gesture that’s popular on athletic courts, one reason that Time cites the popularity of the fist bump is that it lets cautious people avoid too much physical contact, along with the germs that can bring. While a hearty handshake might be the order of the day in a lot of places, fist-bumping helps you avoid germs while still offering a physical greeting.

It might not always be an appropriate option, depending on the situation, but it will help you avoid picking up colds and the flu from your coworkers, or even clients. Especially when combined with a regular hand washing routine.

Tip #2: Avoid Dehydration

If your workday runs on coffee and energy drinks, then chances are good you’re going to start feeling dehydrated. That can leave you sluggish and unfocused, but even worse it can leave gaps in your defenses that make it easier for you to get sick. That’s why, according to WebMD, you need to drink enough water to avoid any sort of crash.

Generally speaking, this is going to be eight to ten glasses of water, but it’s important to remember that if you bring fruit as a snack then that can also help you stay hydrated and alert. Even better, fruit tends to have necessary vitamins to fight off sickness, while helping you keep your waistline trim.

Tip #3: Keep Your Workstation Clean

Most of us forget just how much junk sits around at our workstations. We spend hours a day there, though, and the germs, dust, and debris can really build up when you’re not looking. So to make sure that your tools aren’t actively impinging on your health, Entrepreneur suggests a regular, daily cleaning. Vacuuming out your keyboard, wiping down your keys with a sanitizing cloth, and just generally keeping things tidy can go a surprisingly long way to keeping you healthy mentally, and physically.

Tip #4: Take Regular Breaks

There are few things worse for your health than just going hard all day. It grinds you down, and leaves you exhausted, with nothing left to give. So treat your workday the same way you would a set at the gym; make sure you take regular breaks, stretch, and give yourself time to recuperate after you finish a particular task. Because just like at the gym, if you push yourself too hard, you’re going to end up straining something, and that’s when you get sick. Every time.

Tip #5: De-Stress Yourself

Stress is one of the worst things you can hold onto from your workday, and sadly it also happens to be the thing that we most commonly cling to. If you want to maintain your health, you need to make sure you shed the day’s stress instead of letting it build up. Whether that’s going to the gym after work and getting in a good set, going for a walk on your lunch break, or just spending some time throwing a ball for your dog, find what works for you, and put down that weight when the workday is done. Stress will never do anything good for you, so don’t take it home with you.
